Frequently asked questions

Getting started

What is Pictag?

Pictag is an AI image workspace built around one connected workflow: Generate → Analyse → Upscale → Tag → Prepare → Export. It combines AI chat, image generation, visual analysis, Manual and Smart Tagging, AI upscaling, multilingual Read Aloud, web search, projects and file preparation.

Do I need an account?

Some chat functions can be used as a guest with a lower daily allowance. An account is required to hold or purchase Pictag Credits, use paid AI actions, use supported BYOK connections and enable supported cross-device synchronisation. Pictag currently supports email/password and Google sign-in.

What can I use for free?

Signed-in users currently receive up to 100 free chat messages per day and guests up to 10. The free workspace also includes supported free chat routes, projects, Manual Tagging batches of up to 2,000 JPEG or PNG images, supported voice/web-search functions and BYOK tools. Availability and service limits shown in the app apply.

Does Pictag require a subscription?

No. New purchases use one-time, non-expiring Pictag Credit packs. There is no recurring Pictag subscription to cancel.

AI chat, search and voice

What can AI Chat do?

AI Chat can assist with writing, planning, coding, prompts, image interpretation, research assistance and production work. The app shows which free and credit-funded routes are currently available.

Does Pictag support current web information?

Web-enabled chat is available where supported. When active, it can use current online information instead of relying only on model knowledge.

How does Multilingual Voice / Read Aloud work?

You can speak to Pictag and have supported responses read aloud. Read Aloud uses language-aware neural speech where supported and falls back to a matching browser or operating-system voice where necessary.

Images, tagging and upscaling

What is the difference between Manual Tagging and Smart AI Tagging?

Manual Tagging applies one title, description and keyword set to the whole batch and uses 0 Pictag Credits. Smart AI Tagging analyses each image separately and creates unique metadata for every analysed image. Smart Metadata currently starts at 1 Pictag Credit per analysed image.

How many images can I tag in one batch?

Manual Tagging accepts up to 2,000 JPEG or PNG images per batch. Smart Metadata can also contain up to 2,000 selected images, but the number that can actually be analysed depends on the account's available Pictag Credits.

If I buy credits, do I lose free Manual Tagging?

No. Manual Tagging remains available to accounts that own Pictag Credits. Buying credits adds paid AI capacity; it does not remove the free manual workflow.

What does the AI Upscaler do?

The AI Upscaler can accept up to 2,000 selected images in a batch. Large batches are processed through controlled server capacity rather than attempting 2,000 simultaneous upscale jobs.

What happens to images used with Manual Tagging or AI tools?

Manual Tagging is designed to process selected files in the browser. Smart AI Tagging sends the image data needed for the requested analysis to the configured AI provider. The self-hosted Upscaler processes selected image data through Pictag infrastructure. Pictag is not intended to be permanent cloud storage for the original uploaded files.

Image generation and providers

How does image generation work?

Select an available image model/provider in the app, enter a prompt and choose the displayed generation settings. Generated images can continue into the Pictag workflow for downloading, upscaling and tagging. Model availability and provider limits can change over time.

Who pays for image generation?

Supported generation can be funded with Pictag Credits or, where offered, through BYOK/provider-funded access. Pictag-funded requests use the displayed Pictag Credit cost. BYOK generation uses 0 Pictag Credits because the connected external provider charges its own balance.

What is Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)?

BYOK lets you connect a supported provider credential or provider-funded route that you control. Pictag supplies the interface and workflow while the external provider handles its own balance, model restrictions and service limits.

What is the current connected-provider generation allowance?

Signed-in users can currently make up to 50 successful connected-provider generations per day. Only successful generations reduce the Pictag service allowance. The connected provider may apply separate balance, model, safety or rate limits.

Projects, files and sync

What are Projects?

Projects group chats, reusable instructions and working context so repeated image or production workflows stay organised.

What synchronises between devices?

Supported chats, projects and preferences can synchronise for signed-in users. Original uploaded images, upscaled image binaries and generated image binaries are not included in account synchronisation by default.

Does Pictag permanently store my generated images?

Pictag does not currently operate a permanent cloud Asset Library. Keep local copies of generated or upscaled images you need to retain.

What can I prepare for export?

Pictag can help prepare titles, descriptions, keywords, filenames, dimensions and upscaled outputs for stock marketplaces, websites, clients and asset libraries.

Credits and billing

How do Pictag Credits work?

Pictag uses one universal prepaid balance for supported paid AI actions. Smart Metadata currently starts at 1 credit per analysed image. Other paid chat, coding or image-generation actions can have different displayed costs based on the selected route.

Do purchased credits expire?

No. Purchased Pictag Credits remain in the account until used or the account is deleted.

What happens if a paid AI request fails?

Failed paid AI requests return their reserved credits automatically.

Who processes payments?

Stripe processes one-time Pictag credit-pack purchases. Pictag does not store complete payment-card or bank details.

Can I request a refund?

Contact support promptly if a purchase was made in error. Fully unused credit packs may be eligible for a refund where permitted or required by law. See the Terms of Service for the current policy.

Account, privacy and security

How are connected provider credentials protected?

Saved usable provider credentials are stored encrypted on the server and the app displays only a masked reference. Never send a complete password, authentication code, API key or payment-card number through support messages.

What happens when I sign out?

Signing out ends the active browser session. It does not automatically delete chats, projects or preferences that remain locally or are synchronised with the account.

How do I delete my account?

Use Account & Security and choose the account-deletion option. The application shows the confirmation and recovery process before deletion is completed.

How old do I need to be?

Pictag accounts and purchases are for users aged 18 or older.
